Tate St Ives

Art Gallery

Tate St Ives is an art museum located in the seaside town of St Ives, Cornwall, on the southwestern coast of England. It was opened in 1993 as an extension of the Tate network of galleries, which includes the Tate Britain, Tate Modern, and Tate Liverpool. The museum is housed in a striking building designed by architects Evans and Shalev, which was constructed to blend in with the surrounding landscape and offer visitors breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The museum's collection focuses on modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on works by artists who have lived and worked in Cornwall. The museum's founders believed that Cornwall had played an important role in the development of modern art, particularly through the work of artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, and Peter Lanyon. The museum's collection includes works by these artists, as well as many others who have been inspired by the landscape and culture of Cornwall.

Tate St Ives hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing works from the museum's collection as well as loaned works from other galleries and private collections. The museum also hosts talks, workshops, and events for visitors of all ages, aimed at engaging the local community as well as attracting visitors from further afield.

In addition to its permanent collection and changing exhibitions, Tate St Ives is also known for its stunning location and architecture. The building features a large, sloping roof that echoes the shape of the nearby cliffs, and large windows that offer visitors panoramic views of the ocean. The museum is located on Porthmeor Beach, which is popular with surfers and beachgoers, and is just a short walk from the town's many shops, restaurants, and attractions.

Overall, Tate St Ives is a must-see destination for art lovers and visitors to Cornwall alike. Its impressive collection, engaging exhibitions, and stunning location make it a unique and unforgettable cultural experience.

Felt like I was walking through the seascape!! The exhibitions were great!! The Tate has so many accessible, and family friendly spaces, where you can cool down and experience the fresh sea air, and the best views of the beach and sea from the first floor and the Cafe, where I had been told serves the best coffee in St Ives whilst nothing had been said about the most scrumptious scones ever!! I applaud all the staff who were the best in customer care and beyond pleasant. ❤️.

Very expensive for what it is. Especially given that we have recently been to Edinburgh and the huge art galleries are free. Mediocre only. The cafe is massively over priced so didn’t stop. Disappointing.

I enjoyed the art and enjoyed contemplating the question of "what makes certain art museum worthy?" It was a pleasant way to spend a few hours, especially if the weather is bad. This is a beautiful building right off the sea. Their cafe at the top has amazing views and the gift shop is fun. I recommend going if only to get a tea at the top.

Tate St Ives is a truly beautiful gallery, set in a stunning location right by the sea. The structure itself is impressive — light-filled, airy, and thoughtfully designed to complement both the art and the landscape. It feels modern yet perfectly in tune with its surroundings. The gallery spaces are easy to move through, and the architecture really enhances the experience of the exhibitions. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates art, architecture, and a good coastal view.
