Whitby Abbey
Reviews
The main attraction in Whitby, our day tour's highlight. The architecture is magnificent and stunning. The views of the harbor were spectacular. The 199 steps were not so hard to climb, as the rise of the steps are pretty low, the actual elevation is probably under a hundred meters.
The abbey is absolutely breathtaking both from a distance and up close. You are able to walk around the grounds to see it from all angles. You also get an audio tour included which was very informative. Your ticket also includes the museum which again was very interesting.
Really enjoyed exploring the Abbey. It's very peaceful and relaxing there. The place is well kept and preserved. I love the history of the place, both true and the story written by Bram Stoker as Draculas landing place when he visited the UK. There are around 199 steps up to the Abbey if you walk up. There is a road up to, and regular public transport.
Whitby Abbey is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Perched high on the East Cliff, it offers stunning panoramic views of Whitby and the North Sea that are worth the visit alone. But it’s the history, atmosphere, and sheer presence of the Abbey ruins that truly make this place unforgettable. Steeped in over a thousand years of history, Whitby Abbey is more than just a historical site—it’s a gateway into the past. From its founding in the 7th century to its Gothic transformation and eventual dissolution, walking among its weathered stone walls gives you a deep sense of the stories that shaped this coastal town. Literature lovers will also appreciate its haunting inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula, adding a layer of mystique and romance to the site. To reach the Abbey, try the iconic 199 steps—a charming walk that winds past St Mary’s Church and its atmospheric graveyard, offering both a spiritual and scenic ascent to the top. The journey is as memorable as the destination, and the views only get better with every step. The English Heritage team has done a fantastic job with informative displays and interactive exhibits that are both family-friendly and engaging for history buffs. Whether you’re coming for the history, the architecture, or just the photo opportunities, there’s something here for everyone. Verdict: Whitby Abbey is a must-visit. It blends natural beauty, historical depth, and cultural significance in a way few landmarks can. Whether it’s your first time in Whitby or your tenth, the Abbey—and the walk up to it—never loses its magic.
Stunning location, beautiful scenery and full of history. Well worth a visit. If you want to get up close to the building itself, it's worth paying to go in.... if not, you can see it from the outside.
