Whitstable Museum and Gallery

Speciality Museum

The Whitstable Museum and Gallery is a charming building, with a white façade, blue trim and a traditional English style. Inside, it is home to a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions, including the INVICTA train engine, which was the first locomotive to be used on the Canterbury & Whitstable Railway. Visitors can also take a look at the Peter Cushing display, which pays homage to the actor who was a Whitstable resident for 35 years, and is filled with artifacts, photographs and other memorabilia. The museum also houses a variety of interactive displays and activities, giving visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history of Whitstable and its people.

Great museum with lots of information on local area. A very kind volunteer showed my daughter lots of fossils and was telling her all the information on them, was the highlight of her day! We will be back when we visit Whitstable again. Thank you 😊

Lovely little museum where you can learn a lot about Whitstable! I used to come here about 30 years ago when I was a kid at WCJS, and it has had some great updates. Visited recently while down seeing family, all of the volunteers were great, (thanks Jon for directing us to 'the button'). The Peter Cushing exhibit was really interesting and great as I remember seeing him around town on his bike. Whitstable has changed a bit over the years and got a bit more posh but great to have this authentic slice of the community in town...well worth a visit!

The museum should be your first stop if/when you visit Whitstable. You will be able to appreciate everything you'll see in town after seeing all that this place has to show you: the history of the harbour, the shipbuilding, the Invictus, the Oyster, deep-sea diving, regatta, the community and some of its celebrity residents who have passed away. And to top it off, the museum has staff who are happy to provide answers to any questions you might have.
